Surprisingly vigorous and the picture of good health at 86 years of age, Charley had intended to continue performing and recording for as long as his voice would allow. But sadly he fell ill in late November 2020 and passed away on December 12, 2020 due to complications from COVID-19.
Fans can find solace in the knowledge that many of Charley’s appearances on record have yet to be revealed. Beyond the treasure trove of unreleased studio recordings that exist in various master tape vaults, Charley had been in the studio working on a number of solo and collaborative recordings during January 2020 just prior to the breakout of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In addition to the just-released all-new music album ENDLESSLY: A TRIBUTE TO BROOK BENTON, a digital retrospective COVER STORY, which collects twenty-two (22) "cover songs" that Charley recorded between 1991 and 2020, was released digitally on June 20, 2025. It includes eight (8) recordings that are seeing their first official release in North America and two (2) previously unreleased recordings -- "Ring of Fire" and "Heartaches by the Number." "Heartaches by the Number" is the first recording to be released from Pride’s final January 2020 studio sessions with Billy Yates.
A previously-unreleased studio session outtake, "Ready for the Ride" was digitally released in December 2024 on an expanded reissue of Charley’s 2003 COMFORT OF HER WINGS album. That expanded Edition also includes three (3) live renditions of songs from the album, "Chain of Love", "I Need Somebody Bad" and "Comfort of Her Wings," that were recorded during Pride's subsequent 2005 Canadian tour. Similar expanded editions are currently in the works for some of Charley's other latter day albums.
The last full-length album Charley released prior to his death was 2017’s MUSIC IN MY HEART.
